History

Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was established in 1980. Three years later, the municipal government of the new city founded Shenzhen University (SZU). Characterized by what Mr. Deng Xiaoping called “Shenzhen Speed,” SZU enrolled its first students in 1983, and has since rapidly grown into a well-known multi-discipline institution boasting over 34,000 students, including 5,500 postgraduates and over 1,500 international students. Apart from the full-time students, approximately 13,000 students are engaged in various forms of continuing education.

SZU is fully accredited by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. In the mid-1990’s, SZU passed all academic evaluations and won authorization from the Degree Committee of the State Council to award graduate degrees. In January 2006, the State Council gave SZU approval to grant doctorate degree (PhD). Therefore, with Shenzhen Speed, SZU has developed into a truly comprehensive university offering more than 70 different undergraduate programs, over 130 master’s programs and 8 doctorate degree programs.

Both campuses are fully equipped with the latest technology. Each classroom is web-enabled and wired with digital audio-visual and multimedia devices. Both campuses are entirely covered by Wi-Fi and every classroom, dormitory and office is Internet ready.

The unrivaled sports facilities include modern gymnasiums, multiple tennis courts, table tennis halls, football fields, basketball courts, bowling alley, golf course, running tracks and two outdoor swimming pools. The campus has also a large international standard stadium, in which was held an international football game during the 2011 Universiade hosted by Shenzhen.

Commitment to Internationalization

SZU strongly advocates international academic exchange and cooperation. Towards that end, the university has established cooperative relationship with 210 overseas universities and colleges from 32 countries and regions in the world. Thanks to various efforts, the academic exchange and collaboration have been greatly strengthened. The level of internationalization and the international reputation have been improved gradually, and the campus life has been enriched accordingly. Various channels have been adopted to realize internationalization, such as joint training programs, joint collaboration of academic research center with international famous universities, recruiting top academic talents, holding forefront academic seminars, building platforms for international joint courses, conducting all kinds of activities for international communication etc. So far, SZU has set up an overseas base that focuses on information technology, cooperating with Silicon Valley to combine scientific research, teaching and internships. Also, SZU established Shenzhen International Audencia Business School, a fruit of international cooperation with Audencia Business School, France. Every year, SZU provides 5 million RMB for International Exchange Scholarship and a single award of the scholarship is up to 100 thousand RMB.

SZU began to enroll international students in 1989 and now admits annually about 1,500 international students from nearly 50 countries. They bring diversity, different perspectives, open-minds, and a variety of positive cultural influences to the university.

The College of International Exchange (CIE) and the International Office are working together to create the best learning and living environment for international students. CIE provides Chinese language courses of different levels from elementary to advanced to meet the students’ needs. Apart from the language courses, various elective classes are offered like “Chinese Calligraphy”, “Chinese Painting”, “Chinese Folk Music”, and “Taiji”, enabling students to have an in-depth experience and better understanding of Chinese culture and tradition.

With the growing popularity of studying in China, the CIE and the University International Office continue to create a better and stimulating environment for its ever-growing number of foreign students. As SZU’s international reputation rises, the CIE and the International Office will help keep the university firmly on the path of internationalization, strengthening collaboration and partnership with universities all around the world.

The natural science edition of the university’s journal has been frequently cited by some of China’s leading magazines and scientific journals. In the year 2011 alone, national funding for SZU research projects reached 135 million CNY, which demonstrates the university’s growing research profile.

Information and Research Resources

SZU has two libraries which proudly hold a collection of roughly 5.40 million items comprised of 3.28 million journals and books, along with1.64 million e-books in both Chinese and foreign languages. Some 66,300 full-text e-journals and 1.66 million academic databases are accessible on-site and over the Internet. The main campus (Houhai Campus) is also one of the regional cyber-link stations for the nationwide Chinese Educational and Scientific Research Network. In short, SZU is fully wired, connected, and up to date with all the latest information technology.

Extracurricular Activities

SZU’s main campus has a number of performance centers and social areas for students: a Cultural Corridor, an Art Village, the Stone Drama House, and various speech and lecture halls capable of holding world class performances, events and lectures.

SZU has an open-minded and forward-thinking campus. Scholars and experts from both in and outside of the university are regularly invited to give lectures and talks presenting various schools of thought, new ideas, and introducing the most up-to-date academic information.

Campus student organizations such as the Student Union and other student-led societies organize numerous activities to include culture and art festivals: English Corner activities, International Students Festival, debating contests, sports festivals, and many more. During summer and winter vacations, the student societies organize field trips in business and industries to help students better understand the society they will join soon, and help them gain practical social experiences.
